What is black sheet steel?

Black steel is a low-carbon, hot-rolled steel, as opposed to cold-rolled steel. It is available in various forms, such as strip, square, and sheet steel. In this article, we will look at black steel sheet steel and its many applications

What is black sheet steel      ?

In the final production steps, steel is   rolled to its final dimensions in   large, high-performance rolling mills. Steel rolling is divided into two processes: cold rolling and hot rolling. Carbon steel sheets are produced using the hot rolling process.

Hot rolling creates  an oxide layer on the steel surface  , giving the steel a black color – hence the name. Cold-rolled steel, on the other hand, is often referred to as bright steel due to its shiny surface.

How are black steel sheets manufactured      ?

As with all steel products,  the process begins   with iron ore, which is mined and refined     and     then mixed with a certain amount of alloying elements (mainly carbon and small amounts of nickel, molybdenum, etc.).

After the production of steel bars, these are gradually processed into finished products such as steel sheets and finally steel strips. In a rolling mill, the bars pass through several rollers, each reducing their thickness.

The rolling process influences the quality of the final product . Cold-rolled steel requires more energy and power but yields more precise and durable   products   . Hot-rolled steel is more cost-effective, but the precision of the products is somewhat lower.

Black steel and cold-rolled steel

Hot-rolled black steel sheets are not the only type of steel sheet available; cold-rolled   steel sheets   are also widely used and sold in many industrial applications, such as aluminum sheets and stainless steel sheets.

The main advantage of carbon steel lies in its low cost. Hot rolling   significantly increases efficiency  . Even more importantly, thanks to the large dimensional tolerances, the requirements for machine accuracy are low.

Further improvements were also achieved with regard to processing time, as the alloy no longer needs to be cooled between passes.

In terms of physical properties,  cold-rolled   steel is generally superior in terms of dimensional accuracy, strength, and durability, but it also has its own specific applications. When low weight or corrosion resistance is required, other steel grades such as aluminum and stainless steel are typically used.

Use of black steel plates

Due to its low cost, carbon steel is used in many industries. Here are some of the most common applications:

  • Covers and panels:      Components such as machine covers, electrical housings and enclosed boxes are typically made from black steel sheets, as these are easy to machine and inexpensive.
  • Mounting bracket:      The black steel plate is not the most durable, but when used properly it is perfectly suited for hanging cables, components and anything else that needs to be fastened.
  • Vehicle body:      Since there are no requirements for the surface finish, components such as truck and car bodies can be made from sheet metal.
